Palazzo Tondello

The recent name Palazzo Tondello designates a building complex that emerged to meet the material needs of economic organization and settlement typical of the medieval rural world. Established in the 11th century starting from the key fortress, it immediately became a symbol and tool of the military and social power of the "Da Carrara" family, who inhabited it and who became one of the main and most illustrious noble houses of Padua, destined even to assume command of the city of Padua during the 14th century. This fortified residence and agricultural center, organized based on the model of the medieval "court," did not lose importance over the centuries: during the modern age, however, it was adapted to the modes of habitation and land management of the Venetian patriciate. In the Padua area, it seems to be the only existing example of a villa with a porch. The façade facing the inner courtyard is characterized by the presence of a portico with seven arches on octagonal brick columns, surmounted by a loggia with eleven small arches featuring capitals of tuff in the shape of inverted water leaf (archaic Corinthian).
