Este Medievale renews its commitment to enhancing the local historical and spiritual heritage with the event “Remembering St. Martin and Beatrice I,” a cultural reenactment that intertwines the lives of two emblematic figures: St. Martin, the soldier turned saint, and Beatrice I d’Este, the Benedictine nun who left an indelible mark between Este and the Euganean Hills.
St. Martin Born in the 4th century AD, Martin was initially educated in military discipline. His life changed radically after a gesture of compassion towards a beggar, who turned out to be Christ himself. From that moment on, he lived as a miracle worker in France, embodying justice and sobriety. His memory lives on every November 11th, during the “St. Martin’s summer.”
Beatrice I d’Este Daughter of Marquis Azzo VI, she embraced religious life after severe family losses. She founded the Benedictine monastery of Villa Beatrice on Mount Gemola, becoming a spiritual guide for many women. Beatified by Pope Clement XIII, her remains rest in the Cathedral of Este.
