Castello di Valbona

Location: Lozzo Atestino

The Valbona Castle was built for the defense of the territory of the Counts of Lozzo. There is no precise date for its construction, but it is known that it already existed in the first half of the 13th century; in fact, it is considered a mandatory landmark for the wars that during those years opposed the Padovans, Scaligeri, Estensi, and Vicentini.

The castle has an almost rectangular shape, with sides measuring about forty and twenty-five meters. It features four hexagonal towers, topped by Ghibelline and Guelf merlons, two square-shaped towers, now without merlons, and a principal tower also square and without merlons, almost at the center of the castle.

There are two access doors, each with a security door beside it. The doors almost certainly had a drawbridge since a deep moat filled with water entirely surrounded the structure. The moat has since been filled in, but during the works, many Istrian stone balls were found, likely thrown against the walls especially in the 13th and 14th centuries.

Inside the castle, there are two courtyards, and it maintains, despite being in a good state of preservation, the austere and military appearance it undoubtedly had in the past.

To testify to the presence of the Carrarese lordship in the castle, one can still see the shields with the cart and the crest, carved in soft stone, located on the door on the western side; the four wheels of the cart, constituting the Coat of Arms of the Carraresi, are on the right and still quite well preserved; on the left is the crest somewhat corroded by time but still distinctly showing the emblem consisting of a horned head of a Saracen. On the door on the opposite side, only the crest similar to the previous one remains.

Today, the scenic Valbona Castle represents one of the best-preserved fortresses in the Euganean territory and inside it has been set up a renowned restaurant where events such as weddings and large parties can be organized.

Since 2022, an interactive museum on agriculture and weapons in the Middle Ages has been established, visitable with an audio guide downloadable to one's smartphone, from Wednesday to Sunday, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM (6:00 PM, daylight saving time).
