The Arena was established in the early 1950s from a professional course for stone masons using trachyte. The project was for the construction of a building intended for the community: an arena modeled after the most famous Greco-Roman amphitheaters, built entirely of local trachyte stone. Thus, an elliptical structure was created with a maximum diameter of 32 meters, consisting of a stage, a main floor, and semi-circular tiers that can accommodate an audience of about 600 people.
On August 2, 1952, for the official inauguration of the Montemerlo Arena, a large concert was organized, and since the arena ensures excellent acoustics, the shows and events organized in the following years were also very successful. Unfortunately, with the changing trends that saw cinema and television as a sign of progress, the building fell into disuse and degraded to the point that at first, its demolition was even considered. Fortunately, the architectural features and the history that characterize it led to the decision to opt for its restoration. In 1976, the Pro Loco of Montemerlo was established with the aim of redeveloping this place and restoring its role. With the help of private sponsorships and public funding, it was thus possible to complete the works for the regularization and opening of this important amphitheater.
Today, the Montemerlo Arena represents the main hub of activities in the area; from May to September, theatrical events, concerts, and other cultural events are organized that attract an increasingly large audience even from outside the province.
