Built on the foundations of a pre-existing structure, the Mastio Tower was constructed by Ubertino da Carrara, in the area where the original residence of the Este marquises was located. Positioned at the top of the hill, with its 21 meters in height, it dominates the city of Este and the Euganean Hills of which it is symbol and emblem.
In the north-eastern corner of the thirteenth-century city walls stands the complex of the Gate and the Tower of Rescue, among the most significant historical and architectural structures in the entire area of the Carrarese Castle. Named to indicate the presence of an escape route towards the rear hill, it is still very intricate in structure and retains a completely medieval appearance.

NOTICE!: The Tower of Rescue will be closed for visits from Sunday 13/07 to Saturday 02/08 because the area is involved in the Este Music Festival, and on Sunday July 20 and 27, the ticket office and the Mastio Tower will close at 18:30. Last access to the Tower at 18:00. For these reasons, the "general" ticket office that was located at the Tower of Rescue will be moved to the Accialini Hall at the main entrance of the Castle starting Sunday 27/07/25. Visits will resume regularly on Sunday 03/08.

In case of bad weather, entry may be suspended for safety reasons.
