Having long been a correspondent in the U.S., the Middle East, Russia, Latin America, and Europe, Gianni Riotta now chooses the overwhelming narrative of epic storytelling in a novel where readers will encounter the politics, conflicts, and loves of our time, in a literary transfiguration that is both amused and moved.
The War Party operates in Russia, in the shadow of the Kremlin. They plot to sabotage the United States and Europe by enlisting a gang of former soldiers from the war on terror, long presumed missing, and spreading online catastrophic fake videos produced by highly skilled hackers. In New York, Inspector Joey Dallera and Detective Steve Ernst, veterans of the Battle of Fallujah, grapple with the corpse of a man of enormous build, found in front of a topless bar in Brooklyn. The man has an ancient Latin name tattooed on his forearm. Opposed by the FBI and U.S. intelligence, Dallera and Ernst soon connect the crime to the viral saga on the web of abandoned corpses around embassies and government offices, from New York to Madrid. It will be the analysis of the tattoos, with characters dating back to the Roman Empire, that leads the two policemen to the basements of the Vatican, on the trail of the gang known as the "Gladiators." Meanwhile, at the White House, the first female president of the United States prepares for the worst, after the kidnapping of her daughter, a restless teenager being used by the Gladiators to blackmail Washington. Throughout the investigation, the fates of many characters who populate the novel will unfold, from Meredith De Lattre, a romantic spy traveling from Moscow to the trenches of Ukraine, to Jim Hawkins, the creator of an advanced AI system, Code, capable of predicting future events. At stake is the fate of the world and its chance to survive in the era of chaos and killer disinformation.
