Via Roma, 45 Due Carrare

Villa Bragadin Priuli Soranzo Talpo, oggi Petrobelli

Location: Due Carrare

Located in the heart of Carrara San Giorgio near the town hall. The remarkable architectural complex was designed by the Vicentine architect Vincenzo Scamozzi. The presence of this great architect, who shared the stage of 16th-century European architecture with Palladio, is invoked here by the commissioning family: the Priuli, who commissioned Scamozzi himself to create the two Priuli villas in Treville, in the Treviso region, and San Germano dei Berici, Vicenza, as well as the homonymous palace in Padua. The structures indeed all appear to be characterized by the same architectural language, centered around a greater rigor compared to Palladio and a rationality that was highly appreciated in its time. Built at the end of the 16th century, it develops from a pre-existing medieval nucleus from the 12th and 14th centuries that was the fortified court of the Da Carrara family. It presents itself to the visitor with an imposing asymmetrical facade, with a rusticated ground floor. It is enriched on the noble floor by an opening with a full arch and a balustraded balcony. The complex that dominates the town square includes all the elements of a Venetian villa: garden with fishpond, brolo, barchesse, laborers' houses, and courtyards. Private villa, not open to visitors, viewed from the outside.
