Philip Vandarpleog is an American actor who has lived in Tokyo, Japan, for eight years, which he now considers his home. Once famous for playing a big tube of toothpaste, a superhero in a hugely popular advertisement, he now goes from audition to audition while his agent sends him to be an extra at events like weddings and funerals. It is at a fake funeral that Philip meets Shinji, the head of Rental Family, an agency that provides actors to impersonate non-existent relatives and friends, and he hires him: Philip becomes a journalist and friend of an aging actor, the absent father of a Sino-American girl, the playmate of a video game enthusiast.
