When we talk about the remake of The War of the Roses, we are actually not… talking about a remake. The Roses tells the same story (a well-established, rich, and successful couple ends up loathing each other viscerally) and features two fantastic protagonists (Kathleen Turner & Michael Douglas back then, Olivia Colman & Benedict Cumberbatch now), but there is one glaring difference: the tone. The former is a ferocious, absurd grotesque comedy, while the latter is a dark comedy that is much less extreme and much more realistic, with a story that could happen to anyone. The two Britons Ivy and Theo meet during lunch: he is a successful architect, and she is the chef who is slicing his fish carpaccio. It is love at first sight between the two, an unconditional and overwhelming love.
