L'oratorio di Santa Maria

The Oratory of Santa Maria, better known as the Chiesetta del Pigozzo, is what remains of an ancient church dating back to 1736, partially demolished at the beginning of the last century. It was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary because, it is said, an apparition occurred here to a woman who, while washing clothes, was drawn by the sound of a woodpecker (Pigozzo in the Venetian dialect means woodpecker, cuckoo). Behind and beneath the church flows a very important canal for the hydraulic history of the area: it is the Botte del Pigozzo, a bridge-canal consisting of a tunnel 66 meters long, 5.5 meters wide, and about 3 meters high, through which the rialto canal passes, a stream receiving water from the numerous drains in the plain at the foot of the Colli Euganei, and its waters are channeled right here below to eventually reach the sea. It is opened on March 25, the day of its feast, which has remained very dear to the local tradition linked to the barcari of which it is the protector. Not visitable.
