Via Pontemanco – Pontemanco Due Carrare Due Carrare

L'oratorio della Beata Vergine Maria Annunciata

Location: Due Carrare

During a pastoral visit in 1595, ownership was attributed to the noble Pasqualigo family. Almost a century later, another pastoral visit revealed that the small church was also open to the public. The interior still presents its richly decorated Baroque apparatus, exceptionally intact, consisting of frescoes on the walls, a painted wooden ceiling, stalls along the entire inner perimeter, Stations of the Cross, a marble altar with a altarpiece, and two beautiful marble busts. The walls are adorned with a painted band featuring trompe l'oeil motifs of fake architecture: in particular, a series of medallions interspersed with red marble pilasters and vegetative festoons suspended from lion protomes, create the illusion of supporting the dentiled frame of the wooden ceiling. Behind short balustrades, two windows can be seen: one closed, the other slightly open. From a third small window, protected by a wooden grate, a figure appears holding a rosary. The highest quality pieces are undoubtedly the two marble busts of the Madonna and Christ located beside the altar. These works exhibit fully Baroque characteristics and, in particular, relate to the sphere of Giusto Le Court. The elegant classicizing wooden stalls and the fanciful painted papier-mâché decorations that frame the doors and windows also contribute to the unity of the environment.
