Meeting with Mauro Varotto, Full Professor of Geography and Cultural Geography at the University of Padua.
Followed by the screening of the film "In the Skin of the Dragon" by Katia Bernardi (Italy, 2025, 60 min.).
The story of the arson that destroyed the wooden sculpture Drago Vaia in Lavarone in 2023, and a reflection on the relationship between man, art, and nature, an investigation into a dragon above suspicion and a crime-comedy documentary that smells of wood, with a touch of the countryside.
August 22, 2023. It all begins with the arson of the wooden sculpture “Drago Vaia,” created by artist Marco Martalar on the plateau of Lavarone, in Trentino. The film explores the nuances of the territory and the small mountain community, put in crisis by the fire, in search of clues, responsibilities, and culprits. Because perhaps the unexpected success of that sculpture, born as a response to the terrible Vaia storm, is at the root of it all.
As the investigation unfolds with testimonies and evidence, a wooden egg suddenly appears among the charred remains of the sculpture. The artist has returned to work, because, as we know, dragons do not die with fire; rather, they are reborn, bigger and angrier than before.
