The film tells the biography of Antoni Benaiges, a Catalan elementary school teacher who was a member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party, assigned in 1935 to a school in Bañuelos de Bureba, a small village in the province of Burgos. The young teacher revolutionizes the educational standards of the time, implementing a modern educational method that is attentive to the needs of children. He will be murdered by the fascists of the Falange at the onset of the Spanish Civil War because he was atheist, "red," and outside the socially accepted criteria of the regime.
Antonio's story intertwines with that of Ariadna, set in 2010: the woman is determined to fulfill her grandfather's wish, who is searching for the remains of his father, killed in the war. Ariadna goes to a mass grave where her great-grandfather may be buried.
