Via Tormene, 9 - Valle San Giorgio Baone 35030 Baone (PD)
Chiesa di San Giorgio
Location: Baone
The building underwent some modifications as early as 1448, when it was extended to the niches of the first two side altars.
It was then enlarged and restored in 1616, as stated in the inscription preserved inside.
In 1854, the bell tower, damaged almost a century earlier by a hurricane, was built in Neo-Gothic style.
The church was reconsecrated in 1886.
In 1872, restoration works on the old church began, and in 1921 the Baptistery chapel was added. Further restoration work was carried out in the 1950s.
The southern facade of the church of Valle San Giorgio houses nine fragments of stone inscriptions dating back to the 8th and 9th centuries. Most of these fragments, although scattered in various places, remained in Valle, while two of them were transferred to the National Atestino Museum of Este in the 19th century. Only around 1922 was the complete series reorganized and embedded in the side wall of the church. The main text refers to a church dedicated to the martyrs Felice and Fortunato. These stone fragments likely belonged to an ancient architectural structure that separated the area designated for the faithful from the Presbytery with a pergola over 6 meters long. It is hypothesized that this structure was part of the ancient place of worship, of which only a few remains were left in 1571.
