Chiesa di San Biagio a Cornegliana

Location: Due Carrare

The parish church of Cornegliana, dedicated to Saint Blase, was once owned by the Dotto de’ Dauli family, who had the original building reconstructed in 1490. A third church in modernized Romanesque style and with a single nave was started in 1931. Inaugurated in 1943, it notably incorporates the exquisitely frescoed presbytery from the previous building on the left. On the inner walls of the current new parish church, fourteen bas-relief scenes of the Stations of the Cross, sculpted from white Carrara marble by Antonio Bonazza, a prominent member of a famous 18th-century Venetian sculptor family, are preserved. These were once placed on the exterior wall of the church facing the cemetery. A profound sense of serenity dominates the fourteen stations, especially in the sixth where Jesus is dried by the Virgin, contrasting not only with the sadness and melancholy of the location to which they were destined but also with the restlessness of many images sculpted by the artist. In the third chapel on the left wall, at the top of the painting, Jesus in glory can be seen surrounded by the Madonna, Saint Joseph, Saint John the Evangelist, and Saint John the Baptist, while below, the patron saints of Padua—Justina, Anthony, and Prosdocimo, who holds a model of the city—are depicted in adoration of Christ. The chapel is also adorned with two frescoes depicting the “Last Supper” and “Moses brings forth water from the rock in the desert,” attributed to the painter Stefano Dell'Arzere, while Gaspare Diziani seems to have been the creator of the valuable frescoes on the vault's sails featuring the four evangelists. In the presbytery, there is a Veneto-style altarpiece dating back to 1627, depicting the Madonna of the Rosary with the Christ Child and saints.
