Alfred Eisenstaedt. La fotografia era nell'aria
17 May 2026
Location: ABANO TERME (PD), Museo Villa Bassi Rathgeb
Through a wide and significant selection, the exhibition invites a rediscovery of Alfred Eisenstaedt's gaze, an author who decisively contributed to the definition of the language of photojournalism. The title reflects his thoughts on Germany in the immediate post-war period, a context marked by an extraordinary cultural vitality that shaped his formation.
From 1920s Europe to the United States, where he moved in 1935, Eisenstaedt became one of the most authoritative contributors to Life magazine, producing over 2,500 photo shoots and more than 90 covers. His work helped construct the visual imagination of the 20th century, capturing some of the most significant moments in contemporary history.
Among the most famous images, the shot V-J Day in Times Square on August 14, 1945 – the kiss between a sailor and a nurse during the celebrations for the end of World War II – has become a universal icon.
But his journey extends far beyond: from documenting Europe between the two wars to international reports, to portraits of great figures in politics, science, and entertainment, including Albert Einstein, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Marilyn Monroe, and Sophia Loren.
Spread across two museums and two territories, the exhibition represents a shared project that enhances collaboration between institutions and brings back to the forefront great international photography, returning to the public that energy and innovation which, even today, seem to be “in the air.”
We look forward to welcoming you to closely discover one of the greatest visual storytellers of our time!
